Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid or EDTA Acid serves as an amino-poly carboxylic acid. EDTA is a colourless to whitish powder that is readily water-soluble. EDTA Acid is widely used for dissolving lime scale deposits or as a chelating agent i.e., its ability to "sequester" the metal ions such as Calcium and Ferric. 

In industrial applications, EDTA Acid is mainly used for carrying out the sequestering of metal ions in aqueous solution. In the textile industry, it aids in the prevention of metal ion impurities from modifying colors of dyed products. EDTA Acid is added as a preservative to some food or as a stabilizer to prevent catalytic oxidative decoloration, which is catalyzed by metal ions. In the pulp and paper industry, EDTA inhibits the ability of metal ions, especially Mn2+, from catalyzing the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide, which is used in "chlorine-free bleaching."
